The valleys

The exceptional situation of the town at the mouth of the Vers valley and towards the right bank of the Lot valley, offers contrasting landscapes that constitute its main attraction.

This territory, near the Parc Naturel Régional des Causses du Quercy, is marked by the highly preserved environment. Its rich natural heritage, fauna and flora, contributes to its attractiveness and the quality of its environment. Important areas are also identified under the Natural Areas of Ecological Interest and Fauna, others are recognized through the European Directive of Natura 2000 areas. These measures of inventories and protections concern mainly Creek Valley Nouaillac of the valley and towards the River Lot.
The valleys cut deep open the limestone plateaus of the Causses. They are framed by rocky slopes (the Cevennes), with impressive cliffs) from which one can admire a fantastic panorama view. Towards the winding course of the more intimate Vers, it is punctuated by small waterfalls and a string of water mills, as Raffy mill or the old stationery card room.

The cool green valley bottoms opposes drier and rocky stretches of two plates caussenards, the Causse de Trégantou and the Causse de Vers. Formerly occupied by wineries, these spaces are maintained by farming of sheep and cattle. They retain some traditional farmhouse with a remarkable rural architecture. Connected by a network of paths and a network of walls, they are punctuated by numerous dry-stone huts (or cazelles gariottes) shapes.

These remarkable landscapes have long attracted visitors, as evidenced by the reputation of the inn of the Truite Doree in the early last century. They also inspired artists, from Andre Derain paintings in 1912 today shown at the Hermitage Museum or MOMA, to Jeffery and Sally Stride who still live and work in the town today.

This environment promotes the development of tourism today and with activities such as hiking or cycling and you can practice many recreation associated with the presence of water, such as boating, swimming, canoeing or fishing.
